Maddie Meyer/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — The retired tennis star mistakenly handcuffed by New York City police is returning to the city for this Sunday’s marathon.
James Blake had planned to run the New York City marathon long before he was mistaken for a credit card fraud suspect and slammed to a Manhattan sidewalk by an undercover cop.
“I’m probably going to be pretty tired at the end, but I hope I’ll have the opportunity to shake as many hands as I can with them and thank them, because that day they’re doing tireless work,” Blake said.
Blake has become a critic of excessive force by police but told ABC News’ sister network ESPN there’s no ill will between him and the NYPD.
“I’m proud of the police force I just think there’s a few bad apples that need to be held accountable,” he told ESPN.
The NYPD now requires each use of force to be documented.
