Tim Zeller is one of the leaders of the Mount Vernon High School Baseball team and he stepped up in a big way on Wednesday. The Jackets, 13-2, 7-1 Ohio Cardinal Conference, took the early lead on the Wooster Generals as in first Jared Laslo walked and Jacob Tiell smacked an RBI double. After a strikeout and a passed ball got Tiell to third, Nate Orr knocked in Tiell with a groundout to short. The Generals got on the board in the second after a leadoff triple, Grant Peabody drove in a run to cut the Jackets lead to 2-1. Mount Vernon responded in the second thanks to an RBI double by Marcus Shellenbarger, an RBI single by Harrison Hux and a three run double by Orr and the Jackets led 7-1.
In the third the Generals got three runs highlighted by a two run double by catcher Mike Merritt. In the bottom of the frame the Jackets got 4 runs back on an RBI single by Laslo and a three run bomb off the scoreboard by Tiell to make it 11-4 Mount Vernon.
Wooster wasn’t going away as they scored a single run in the fourth and scored five runs in the 5th. A pair of sacrifice flies, a pair of bases loaded walks and an RBI single helped the Generals trail only 11-10. The Generals came back to tie it in the 6th on an RBI groundout by Noah Hart.
In the bottom of the sixth though Mount Vernon Senior Tim Zeller sent the second pitch he saw over the fence to give the Jackets a 12-11 lead that stood.
Jaret Gaumer pitched for Mount Vernon and got the win. Wooster fell to 6-5-1 with the loss and 5-2 in the OCC.
