This past weekend, Motorcycle enthusiasts from around the country gathered at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course over the weekend for the tracks annual Vintage Motorcycle Days. Over three days the track held different types of racing from motorcross, to flat racing to vintage road racing. Motorcycles from nearly every era were on display at the expansive facility.
The weekend has always been a fun weekend, but on Saturday, tragedy struck the event.
The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) and Mid-Ohio Sports Car course, announced that Mike Wells, age 67, of Boyton Beach, Florida , a lifetime AMA member and long-time WERA competitor, passed away after a crash in his race on Saturday..
Wells was racing in the 350cc Grand Prix WERA Vintage event this past Saturday at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. According to AMA’s James Holter, Wells “ran off at Turn One, was not on the racing line, and according to witnesses was slumped over his motorcycle.” Wells crashed his motorcycle in the grass run-off area outside of Turn One, where he received medical attention from a doctor and other safety workers.
Wells was transported to a local hospital via ambulance, but he did not survive.
An official cause of death has not been announced.
