Alicia Svigals’ Klezmer Fiddle Express to visit Kenyon

GAMBIER, Ohio — Alicia Svigals, the world’s leading klezmer fiddler, will present a program of energetic Jewish music at Kenyon College on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 8 p.m. in Rosse Hall, 105 College Drive. Svigals will be joined by Lauren Brody on accordion and vocals, Aaron Alexander on drums, and Brian Glassman on double bass.

Svigals is a founder of the Grammy-winning Klezmatics and was selected to be a 2014 MacDowell Fellow. She has played with and composed for violinist Itzhak Perlman, the Kronos Quartet, and playwrights Tony Kushner and Eve Ensler, among others. She also has worked with poet Allen Ginsberg as well as Robert Plant and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin. Svigals has appeared on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” “Good Morning America,” PBS’s “Great Performances” and NPR’s “Prairie Home Companion” and “Weekend Edition.”

Klezmer music is the traditional celebration music of Eastern European Jews. Prior to Saturday’s Klezmer Fiddle Express concert, the klezmer artists will offer a workshop in this musical style Friday, Feb. 17, at 11 a.m. in Brandi Recital Hall, 105 College Drive. The workshop is open to the public, and student musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments for hands-on activities.

Also on Friday, the Klezmer Fiddle Express musicians will provide live music for a Yiddish folk dance masterclass at 4:10 p.m. in Shaffer Dance Studio, 207 College-Park St. Steven Weintraub, the “Pied Piper of Yiddish dance,” will lead the class. Weintraub also will serve as dance leader at Svigals’ performance Saturday.

Svigals’ visit is sponsored by the Department of Dance, Drama and Film, the Department of Modern Languages, the Department of Music, Faculty Lectureships, and Hillel.
